Ramlila, a dramatic folk re-enactment of the epic is found not only in the Indian subcontinent, but also in Bali, Myanmar, Cambodia and Thailand. Scholars also note that the tradition of Ramlila is ancient.

Norvin Hein speculates an ancient grand tradition of Vaishnava dance dramas to explain the similarity of themes, gestures and staging conventions between diverse performance traditions across the country like Kathakali, Kathak, Yakshagana etc.

According to Hein, since the Muslim rule destroyed the bases of patronage and training required for the top down dissemination of the epics, the folk dramas adapted to the admittedly adverse conditions, wherein a simple performance could be quickly orchestrated with relatively few resources.

Comprising 24,000 verses in seven cantos, the epic contains the teachings of the very ancient Hindu sages. One of the most important literary works of ancient India, it has greatly influenced art and culture in the Indian subcontinent and South East Asia, with versions of the story also appearing in the Buddhist canon from a very early date. The story of Rama has constantly been retold in poetic and dramatic versions by some of India's greatest writers and also in narrative sculptures on temple walls. It is one of the staples of later dramatic traditions, re-enacted in dance-dramas, village theatre, shadow-puppet theatre and the annual Ram-lila (Rama-play).

The epic's poetic stature and marvellous story means that the story of Rama has been constantly retold by some of India's greatest writers both in Sanskrit and regional languages. It is one of the staples of various dramatic traditions, in court drama, dance-dramas, and in shadow-puppet theatres. In northern India, the annual Ram-lila or 'Rama-play' is performed at the autumn festival of Dassehra to celebrate with Rama and Sita the eventual triumph of light over darkness.

A hugely popular television series, 'Ramayan', was aired in India 1987-1988, drawing over 100 million viewers to become 'the world's most viewed mythological serial'. Dubbed 'Ramayan' fever by India Today magazine, it was reported that India came to a virtual standstill as so many people who could gain access to a television stopped whatever they were doing to watch the small screen adventures of Rama. From January 2008, a new big-budget primetime series of the Ramayana has been appearing on television screens across India.

The Ramayana manuscripts commissioned by Rana Jagat Singh of Mewar (1628-1652) were illustrated on the grandest scale so that no episode or detail of importance was omitted. This necessitated the revival of the ancient narrative method of simultaneous narration used in both sculpture and painting. In European or Islamic illustration, each picture usually concentrates on depicting a single episode of the story - but in the Indian method, each picture might capture several episodes in the story so that the characters appear more than once in the same picture.

Seetha Rama is an upcoming Indian Kannada-language television serial. Nithin Krishnamurthy is the director and producer of the serial. Vaishnavi Gowda and Gagan Chinappa are showing up in the lead role. What is more, the serial is produced under the banner of RRR Creations.

The serial is loosely based on the storyline of the Marathi television show Majhi Tujhi Reshimgath. It depicts the story of a ill-fated girl Seetha whose husband deserts her when she becomes pregnant.

Amber Lone (dramatist) is a bold new British Asian voice. She has had three acclaimed plays at Birmingham Rep: Paradise (2003), Deadeye(2006) & Four Streets (2009). She was a regular writer on Silver Street for BBC Asian network

Niraj Chag (composer) wrote outstanding original music for the R4 dramatisation of The Mahabharata. He wrote a witty score for Rafta Rafta at the National Theatre currently being made into a feature film . He has written and produced his own albums 'Along the Dusty Road' 2006 and 'Lost Souls' 2009 and composed music for BBC TV documentaries on Turner, Picasso and Bhopal.

However, one month down the line, the serial appears to have taken wings of its own and deviated completely from the original text of Valmiki Ramayana. Moreover, the much-touted perspective of Sita is yet to emerge as well.

Though the serial at first had raised expectations of this writer with its VFX, soon it became clear that the serial has VFX alone without much substance or value to write about. The serial has not only distorted the original story, but has tried to impose modern secular-liberal values upon the Ramayana thereby making a complete mockery of the Hindu text which is not only considered as a true account of history (itihasa) in Hindu tradition but is also held in high respect and sacredness by millions of Hindus. 2ff7e9595c
